The Weather Network company Site Redesign Project

Designing a new desktop and mobile-web experience for the Canadian Weather Network company (TWN)

COMPANY

The Weather Network (TWN) Canada. A SapientNitro's client

ROLE

Information architect

TASK

Content audit, site map, user flow, wireframes

DURATION

7 months

OBJECTIVES

Extend Reach - get more people to come to the site more often

Deepen Engagement - create a relevant user experience that expands beyond routine weather checking

The new site was designed to be adaptive - both in time and in place, social, sharable, hyper-localized, but also inclusive of the larger world - as defined by individual users. The new site enables personalization - both actively and passively, and it is used as a planning tool, whether long or short-term.

USER VALUE PROPOSITION

  • Customized and customizable experience - tailored to users' needs

  • Enable users to sync their most relevant content and forecast information to any device and any channel

PROCESS

In the fall of 2012, I worked as an information architect at SapientNitro. I joined the large TWN team, which included over a dozen different creative roles; UI designers, information architects, interactive designers, and several art and creative directors. By the time I got on board, the team was wrapping up their eight weeks phase of  "Discover and Define" and was getting ready to start the "Design and Develop" (25-32 weeks) portion of the project.

During the RFP phase, SapientNitro team presented to TWN a couple of concepts. My role was to document the current experience and to present the future/proposed version. I created a content audit, site maps, user flow, and a series of conceptual wireframes (see a sample from those artifacts below).

During the touch-points with the client, I led the client-presentations and facilitated discussions and workshops. Once the team was ready to move forward with the chosen concept, I focused on creating detailed/annotated wireframes for the web and mobile-web solutions (also below). The TWN’s architects and developers on the team later used these artifacts, and about six to eight months later, the new site was launch and received positives feedback.
